Facts about HOLLYWOOD you've never heard of!

1. Hollywood was initially built in 1923 by Harry Chandler for a cost of $21,000. It was built to advertise the area "Hollywoodland". Built to last for only a year and a half, it lasted for more than eighty years and is still going strong.
2. In '39, there was a small white dot below the sign. It contained four thousand twenty watt bulbs to light up the structure and was maintained by a caretaker.
3. A piece of Hollywoodland was sold to the city of Los Angeles, which included the part of land that had the Hollywood sign on it.
4. In '49, L, A, N &D were removed and H was helped up because it was half toppled over. This form of the sign came to stay.
5. The sign deteriorated to wither until it fell under its own weight .It was brought back to shape by generous donors in '78 during which for three months because a new sign was being put up. Hugh Hefner held a fundraiser auctioning off each letter of the sign. Alice Cooper sponsored one O. Gene Aunty sponsored an L and Paul Williams a W.
6. Then in '95, to maintain the sign Hollywood Sign Trust was setup, which was created to keep the Hollywood Sign in top shape.
7. The Hollywood Chamber Of Commerce became the signs image and licensing manager. The sign itself became the property of the city of Los Angeles.
8. In 2000, lightning destroyed the signs surveillance booth and Panasonic was called to set up a security system for the sign with microwave triggered motion detectors, external alarms and a close circuit television network.

It's a 6 week fundraiser and the initial target had been set at AED 200 million which was crossed in the first week itself.

By launching this initiative, H.H. Shaikh Mohammad will change the lives of millions of children, who don't have education and food.

This is a great campaign and will be very very successful.

MY VISIT TO INDIA

Holidays are times when you can visit your native places if you are living in a foreign country. Like me, in Dubai. I too visited my native place, India.

I hadn’t visited India for 2 years, so my visit was eagerly awaited. My cousins, friends were really enthusiastic to meet me. After the sweltering heat and the tough exams and not-so- bad results, my heart jumped at the prospect of a holiday.

I left at the 29th of June and reached Bombay after a boring flight. We caught a taxi at once and left for Goregaon (part of Bombay). My granddad was really happy seeing us after such a long time and his eyes brimmed with emotion.

After a normal few days (normal being bitten by huge mosquitoes), I started preparations for my brother’s sacred thread ceremony. This family function helped me to meet all my cousins and friends. It was a joyful reunion.

After the ceremony, on the 11th of July, we set out on a pilgrimage, visited the temples in South India (Tirupati, Palghat, Salem and Tirupur) and meeting more relatives. On this journey of 10 days, the mosquitoes did not leave me, no sire.

We reached Bombay on the 25th of July and for a week I played on the PS2 with my cousins.

We returned on the 2nd of August, feeling satisfied and contended after a month long holiday.

The wonder of space - Galactic Suite

“Galactic Suite”, the first hotel planned in space, expects to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.

Features:

• Space hotel costs $4m for three-day stay
• Guests spa in weightless room of bubbles
• Cost of tourist space travel plummeting

Its Barcelona-based architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million for a three-day stay.

During that time guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.

Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was dictated by the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space.

“It's the bathrooms in zero gravity that are the biggest challenge,” Mr Claramunt said.

“How to accommodate the more intimate activities of the guests is not easy.”

But they may have solved the issue of how to take a shower in weightlessness - the guests will enter a spa room in which bubbles of water will float around.

When guests are not admiring the view from their portholes they will take part in scientific experiments on space travel.

Galactic Suite began as a hobby for former aerospace engineer Claramunt, until a space enthusiast decided to make the science fiction fantasy a reality by fronting most of the $3 billion needed to build the hotel.

An American company intent on colonising Mars, which sees Galaxy Suite as a first step, has since come on board, and private investors from Japan, the US and the United Arab Emirates are in talks.

Plenty rich enough

If Mr Claramunt is secretive about the identity of his generous backer, he is more forthcoming about the custom he can expect.

“We have calculated that there are 40,000 people in the world who could afford to stay at the hotel," he said.

"Whether they will want to spend money on going into space, we just don't know.”

Four million dollars might be a lot to spend on a holiday, but those in the nascent space tourism industry say hoteliers have been slow on the uptake because no one thought the cost of space travel would come down as quickly as it has.

Galactic Suite said the price included not only three nights in space.

Guests also get eight weeks of intensive training at a James Bond-style space camp on a tropical island.

“There is fear associated with going into space,” Mr Claramunt said.

“That's why the shuttle rocket will remain fixed to the space hotel for the duration of the guests' stay, so they know they can get home again.”

In an era of concern over climate change, Galaxy Suite have no plans so far to offset the pollution implications of sending a rocket to carry just six guests at a time into space.

“I'm hopeful that the impact of seeing the Earth from a distance will stimulate the guests' urge to value and protect our planet,” Mr Claramunt said.

Mississippi River bridge Collapses

In the weeks prior to August 1, 2007, Mn/DOT conducted repairs on the surface of the bridge and, shortly before the incident, announced that it would reduce traffic flow on the bridge to one lane in each direction during the late evenings of July 31 and August 1 to accommodate construction.^[34][35][36]

At 6:01:38 PM, CDT on August 1, 2007, a large portion of the bridge collapsed into the river and onto the riverbanks below.^[35][37] The collapse took only four seconds, sending more than 50 vehicles, their occupants and several construction workers into the river or onto its banks.^{[12][35][38][39]}

Several vehicles caught fire among the debris, including a semi-trailer truck, forcing fire crews to route hoses from several blocks away.^[12] In addition, a portion of the bridge fell onto a freight train traveling beneath the structure.^[40] No one on the train was injured.^[41] Drivers were stranded on parts of the collapsed bridge that were not submerged.^[42] Fifty children, aged four to fourteen, and eight staff members were riding a school bus that was on the bridge at the time of the collapse, returning from a weekly field trip to a water park. The bus made it most of the way across the bridge before the roadway collapsed underneath the vehicle.^[43] Reports indicate that all the children on the bus escaped safely, but one youth worker was severely injured.^[44]

Sequential images of the collapse were taken by an outdoor security camera located near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers control house for Saint Anthony Falls Lower Lock and Dam.^[45][46]

By August 2, rescue efforts had shifted to recovery of fatalities, with several vehicles known to be trapped under the debris and at least eight persons reported missing.^{[35][47][48][49]} The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowered the river level using the Ford Dam (located approximately 3 miles (5 km) downriver at West River Road and East 50th Street) by two feet (60 cm) on August 2 to allow easier access to vehicles in the water; lowering it any more than that would actually create a more dangerous environment for divers.^[50][51]

Munnabhai goes to jail :(

Mumbai: An Indian court jailed Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt for six years on Tuesday for acquiring illegal weapons from gangsters involved in India's worst bombings that killed 257 people in 1993.

Dutt, 48, was cleared of conspiracy charges in the serial blasts in India's financial capital of Mumbai, but was found guilty of unauthorised possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol.

"It was an eminently dangerous act," judge Pramod Kode said. "With the punishment of a minimum of five years and maximum of 10 years it can in no way be a minor offence or of a less grave nature."

Dutt's trial has transfixed India and fans of Bollywood, the world's largest film industry by ticket sales. He has millions of dollars riding on him in films under production.

The actor is the most high-profile among 100 people, mostly Muslims, found guilty in the bombings trial, one of the world's longest-running court cases.

The 1993 Mumbai attacks were ordered by India's most wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim, a Muslim, to avenge the razing of a 16th-century mosque by Hindu zealots in 1992 and subsequent Hindu-Muslim riots in India, police say.

Ibrahim and his top associates have not faced trial as they fled the country soon after the blasts, police say. Ibrahim is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, but the government in Islamabad denies this.

Dutt's lawyers had urged that the actor, who found fame playing gangsters and anti-heroes, be set free for his good behaviour during his bail.

But the court rejected the argument.

Son of legendary film couple Sunil Dutt and Nargis, the heavy-set actor has been on bail since 1995 after more than a year in prison during initial investigations into the blasts.

He is expected to appeal.

Tribute to Chris Benoit

Standing at 5'11'' and weighing in at 234 pounds, this legendary Canadian is no more.
I'll be giving a tribute to Chris Benoit by writing about his past achievements.
He is very close to the hearts of Eddie Guerrero fans, as they were tag team champs.

Let's have a look at his illustrious career:

Benoit idolized the Dynamite Kid growing up, and styled himself after him. This prompted him to be a wrestler, so when he began wrestling, he wrestled as "Dynamite" Chris Benoit, as a tribute to the Kid. He also began using the Diving Headbutt and the Snap Suplex, some of the Kid's trademark moves.

In 1990, he won his first major championship, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, from Jushin Liger. He eventually lost the title (and his mask) back to Liger, forcing him to reinvent himself as Wild Pegasus. He went on to win the Super J Cup Tournament in 1994, defeating Black Tiger, Gedo, and Great Sasuke in the finals, solidifying his status as one of the foremost junior heavyweights in the world.


In 1994, Benoit signed with Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). While there, he dropped the "Pegasus" gimmick, becoming The Canadian Crippler, because of his rougher style, and an incident where he took out Rocco Rock with a powerbomb through a table. Coincidentally, after taking up this gimmick, Benoit was involved in a match with Sabu during which Sabu broke his neck. The injury came when Benoit threw Sabu with the intention that he take a face-first "pancake" bump, but Sabu attempted to turn mid-air and take a backdrop bump instead. He did not achieve full rotation and landed almost directly on his neck.

Benoit and Dean Malenko won the ECW Tag Team Championship from Sabu and The Tazmaniac in February 1995. After winning, they were initiated into the Triple Threat stable, led by ECW World Heavyweight Champion, Shane Douglas. The team lost the titles to The Public Enemy that April at ECW's Three Way Dance.

Along with Guererro, Saturn and Malenko, Benoit debuted in the WWF as a stable that became known as The Radicalz. After losing their "tryout matches" upon entry, The Radicalz aligned themselves with WWF Champion Triple H and became a heel faction. Benoit would quickly win his first title in the WWF just over a month later at WrestleMania 2000, pinning Chris Jericho in a triple threat match to win Kurt Angle's Intercontinental Championship. Benoit then entered into a long-running feud with Jericho, who made fun of Benoit's demeanor by referring to him constantly as "Mr. Roboto" due to his cold personality. Benoit and Jericho would meet on PPV four times in nine months, exchanging the title back and forth and culminating in Jericho defeating Benoit in a ladder match at the 2001 Royal Rumble. Benoit would win the Intercontinental Title three times between April 2000 and January 2001.


During the first WWE Draft, he was picked by Vince McMahon third to be part of the new SmackDown! roster, although still on the injured list. However, when he returned, he did so as a member of the RAW roster. On his first night back, he turned heel again and aligned himself with Eddie Guerrero, and he would feud with Steve Austin briefly. He and Eddie Guerrero were then moved to SmackDown during a storyline "open season" on wrestler contracts, with Benoit taking his newly won Intercontinental championship with him. Rob Van Dam defeated Benoit at SummerSlam 2002 and returned the title to RAW.

After returning to SmackDown! in October, he was crowned the first winner of the WWE Tag Team Championship, alongside foe and partner Kurt Angle. They both turned face again by betraying Los Guerreros. The two made an impressive combination, but could not stand each other.

On January 25, 2004 Benoit won the 2004 Royal Rumble by last eliminating Big Show, and thus earned a WWE Championship title shot at WrestleMania XX. As a result of the long-standing Royal Rumble tradition that the winner receives a shot at the world champion at WrestleMania, being on the SmackDown! brand at the time, Benoit would challenge for the WWE Championship.



Benoit, however, exploited a "loophole" in the rules and challenged World Heavyweight Champion Triple H. This "loophole" clause has become standard storyline practice, with the Royal Rumble winner being free to choose which title he will challenge for.

With this win, Benoit became one of only two men to enter at #1 and win the Royal Rumble (Shawn Michaels being the first, in 1995).

On March 14, 2004, at WrestleMania XX, Chris Benoit won the World Heavyweight Championship by forcing Triple H to tap out to his signature submission move, the Crippler Crossface. It marked the first time the main event of a WrestleMania ended in submission (it happened again at WrestleMania 22 and WrestleMania 23.

On August 15, 2004, Chris Benoit was defeated by Randy Orton for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam.On July 24, 2005 at The Great American Bash 2005, Benoit failed to win the WWE United States Championship from Orlando Jordan, but he faced him in a rematch at SummerSlam 2005. Benoit defeated Jordan in 25 seconds with the Crippler Crossface to win the title.[52] On the next two editions of SmackDown!, Benoit defeated Jordan by submission in 23.4 seconds and 22.5 seconds. Two weeks later, Benoit defeated Jordan by submission in 49.8 seconds. Benoit then started wrestling Booker T in some friendly competitions, but it was all a ploy, as Booker and his wife, Sharmell, cheated Benoit out of the US title on an episode of SmackDown!.



After controversy surrounding a US title defense against Booker T, Theodore Long set up a "Best of Seven" series between the two. Booker T won three times in a row, due largely to his wife's interference, and Chris Benoit faced elimination in the series. Benoit won the fourth match to stay alive, but after the match, Booker suffered a legitimate groin injury, and Randy Orton was chosen as a stand-in, but Benoit defeated Orton twice by disqualification. However, in the 7th and final match, Orton defeated Benoit with the help of Booker T, Sharmell, and Orlando Jordan, and Booker captured the US title. Benoit feuded with Orton for a short time, only to compete against Booker for the US title. Benoit was given one last chance at the US title at No Way Out 2006 and won it by making Booker submit to the Crippler Crossface, ending the feud.

Benoit entered the 2006 King Of The Ring tournament, only to be defeated by Finlay in the opening round, after Finlay struck Benoit's neck with a chair and delivered a Celtic Cross. At Judgment Day 2006 Benoit gained some revenge by defeating Finlay with the Crippler Crossface in a grudge match. On the following edition of SmackDown!, Mark Henry attacked Benoit during a match, giving him back and rib injuries. Benoit then announced a sabbatical to heal nagging shoulder injuries. On October 8, Benoit made his return at No Mercy, defeating William Regal by submission in a surprise match. Later that week, he won his fifth United States Championship from Mr. Kennedy also by submission.

Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) claimed that he was the best man to hold the US title, so he challenged Benoit for the title at WrestleMania 23, where Benoit retained. Their rivalry continued with similar results again at Backlash. At Judgment Day, however, MVP gained the upperhand and the title in a two-out-of-three falls match.

On the June 11 edition of RAW, Benoit was drafted from SmackDown! to ECW as part of the 2007 WWE Draft, after losing a match to Bobby Lashley. Benoit won his ECW debut match teaming up with CM Punk and defeating Elijah Burke and Marcus Cor Von by disqualfication. With Lashley's draft to RAW, the ECW World Championship was vacated.

On June 19, 2007, Benoit wrestled his last (WWE) match defeating Elijah Burke to be a contender for the vacated Championship and was going to face fellow contender CM Punk at Vengeance. However, Chris Benoit was absent due to a family emergency.

On June 25, 2007, he died in a Triple suicide(supposedly).

The world has lost it's only Wolverine.

Chris Benoit passes away

This is a big shock to WWE and all the WWE fans.

WWE Superstar Chris Benoit passed away on 25th June 2007. He was found dead in his Fayetteville County home, alongside the bodies of his wife, Nancy Daus and his 7-year-old son, Daniel.

"Investigators were not seeking any suspects outside the home where Benoit apparently took his own life after killing his wife and son.", said Fayette County district attorney Scott Ballard.

His wife was bound at the wrists and feet, while there were no signs of restraint on his son, both died of asphyxiation.
It is reported that his wife died on Friday, his son died on Saturday, and Benoit killed himself later Saturday evening or early Sunday morning.
Benoit's body was found dead of asphyxiation hanging by the cord of a weight machine in his basement.
It was also reported that there was a Bible by both Nancy and Daniel's bodies.

WWE canceled the scheduled three hour long live RAW show on June 25, and replaced the broadcast version with a tribute to his life and career, featuring his past matches.
