Aussie wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist shocked the world by announcing his retirement plans. Gilly said that he would retire from tests after the Adelaide test ending today and from ODIs after the upcoming tri series.

Gilchrist said “It is with great pride and honour that I make the decision to retire from international cricket. I have come to this decision after much thought and discussion with those important to me. My family and I have been fortunate to have had an amazing journey full of rich experiences throughout my career and are sincerely grateful to all who have helped make this stage of our lives so fulfilling.”

Gilchrist’s announcement came after he broke the record for most Test dismissals by a wicketkeeper and declared he had no plans of retiring. He is the fifth player in 14 months after Warne, McGrath, Langer and Martyn to retire.

CA chief O’ Connor paid tribute to the great left hander calling him Aussies finest wicketkeeper batsman. He said that Gilchrist’s influence on the game had gone beyond stats both in terms of dignity and respect for the traditions of the game.

“I am now ready and excited to move into the next phase of my life.” He said. “Thank you to all my team mates and support staff who have given me the most enjoyable, fun career anyone could hope for and to the many opponents I have come across”

The second test of Australia Vs India was most awaited. After the Aussies had gone one up in the series, all eyes were on India for a comeback. The Boxing Day test started right on cue in Sydney as the Australians batted first.

After a Hayden century, the Australians collapsed at 330. The Indians redponded strongly, as Tendulkar and Ganguly set up a good platform even with Harbhajan contributing.

But when Tendulker and Harbhajan were batting, there took place an incident during which Harbhajan called Symonds “ a monkey”. Not taking it seriously, the game went on.

In Australia’s second innings, India had the champs on the ropes. But Symonds pulled the Australians out to safety with a century. But on 30, he was clearly stumped, with umpire Bucknor not referring to the third umpire.

Setting India a huge total, the Australians crept in for the kill.Steadily taking wickets, the Aussies won the match in the penultimate over in which Clarke took 3 wickets. But replays suggested that Ganguly and Dravid were not out, and Ponting had instructed the umpire to do so, after consulting the fielders.

After such a victory, the Australians were under fire for their dishonest ways. They replied calling Harbhajan “a racist” for his comments on Symonds.

This combined with a loss, awoke the sleeping dragon as there was uproar in India. The BCCI threatened the ICC to withdraw the case or they would home.

Defeated, the ICC kept the hearing after the third test. Now after the third test is over, with India winning easily, what is the opinion of the Indians for those Down Under ????

Hollywood was initially built in 1923 by Harry Chandler for a cost of $21,000. It was built to advertise the area "Hollywoodland". Built to last for only a year and a half, it lasted for more than eighty years and is still going strong.

Aerogel, one of the world’s lightest solids, can withstand a direct blast of 1kg of dynamite and protect against heat from a blowtorch at more than 1,300C.

Scientists are working to discover new applications for the substance, ranging from the next generation of tennis rackets to super-insulated space suits for a manned mission to Mars.

Mercouri Kanatzidis, a chemistry professor at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, said: “It is an amazing material. It has the lowest density of any product known to man, yet at the same time it can do so much. I can see aerogel being used for everything from filtering polluted water to insulating against extreme temperatures and even for jewellery.”

Aerogel is nickamed as "frozen smoke" because it is made by extracting water from silica gel.
It also has a hazy appearance that justifies the nickname.

MY VISIT TO INDIA

Holidays are times when you can visit your native places if you are living in a foreign country. Like me, in Dubai. I too visited my native place, India.

I hadn’t visited India for 2 years, so my visit was eagerly awaited. My cousins, friends were really enthusiastic to meet me. After the sweltering heat and the tough exams and not-so- bad results, my heart jumped at the prospect of a holiday.

I left at the 29th of June and reached Bombay after a boring flight. We caught a taxi at once and left for Goregaon (part of Bombay). My granddad was really happy seeing us after such a long time and his eyes brimmed with emotion.

After a normal few days (normal being bitten by huge mosquitoes), I started preparations for my brother’s sacred thread ceremony. This family function helped me to meet all my cousins and friends. It was a joyful reunion.

After the ceremony, on the 11th of July, we set out on a pilgrimage, visited the temples in South India (Tirupati, Palghat, Salem and Tirupur) and meeting more relatives. On this journey of 10 days, the mosquitoes did not leave me, no sire.

We reached Bombay on the 25th of July and for a week I played on the PS2 with my cousins.

We returned on the 2nd of August, feeling satisfied and contended after a month long holiday.

Ubuntu Linux--> It's one hell of a software!

Yesterday I was browsing through CNET and I found a video which explained the steps to install Ubuntu Linux which is an OS like Mac and Windows.

The name of the installer is Wubi.

I thought maybe I would give it a shot and downloaded the 9MB setup file.

After runnung it, it asked me my username and password and then started downloading Ubuntu itself!

I guess 700MB was downloaded in about 6 hours for me. This could be a nightmare if you have a dial up connection.

After the installation finished, I was prompted to reboot and I did so.

This time it gave me 2 options: Microsoft Windows and Wubi Ubuntu. I highlighted the Wubi Ubuntu option and pressed enter, and it booted up in Ubuntu Linux! It was kinda chocolaty and very simple at the start. But when I turned on the desktop effects, the real fun started.

I could literally change the screen! It actually moved like a cuboid! It's got this 3D effect which is really cool!

Then, when I took a window and shook it, there was this woogle effect! It literally woogled!

And the best part is it comes with free software. A free OS coming with great effects and free software like Firefox, Open Office.org, Gimp, etc. is amazing. Go on, give it a try.

I personally think it's more advanced than Vista if you add something called Beryl which gives Ubuntu a twinkling starlight effect. Magnifico!

India won a three-match series against England 1-0 after the final Test at The Oval was drawn here on Monday. England, set what would have been a fourth innings Test record of 500 to win, finished on 369 for six. Matt Prior was 12 not out and Ryan Sidebottom three not out after Kevin Pietersen top-scored with 101.

Anil Kumble was named Man-of-the-Match.

James Anderson was awarded the English Man-of-the-Series while Zaheer Khan was awarded the Indian Man-of-the-Series.

The draw meant India had won only their third Test series in England in 15 tours dating back 75 years following successes in 1971 (1-0) and 1986 (2-0).

It also ended England’s six-year unbeaten run in home Test campaigns, a sequence which had seen them win eight and draw three out of 11 series since losing the 2001 Ashes.

Ambigrams are English words which are written in such a way that we read the same word or words upside down as when it is written normally.

Ambigrams were first used as symbols in the Satanic cult Illuminati as brands against the Church.

India has done it again !!!!

This time at the Oval scoring a massive 664 on a dry pitch, 6 batsmen scoring above 50 runs. This is an amazing performance for the men in blue. Tendulkar scored 82, Laxman 51, Dravid 55, Kartik 91 and Dhoni a whirlwind 92. But a tailender stole the show.

Anil Kumble , India’s best bowler with above 550 wickets, hit the hapless English bowlers around to finish the innings with a maiden ton , 110 runs flawlessly. The spinner hit everyone around the park effortlessly, in the innings of his life.

Kumble, a veteran of nearly 120 tests, put the icing on the cake as India was on top.

Congrats Kumble!!!!

The Simpsons Movie Review: PG 13

America's favourite dysfunctional family make their silver screen debut in the Simpsons Movie.
This family has been entertaining audiences all over the world for almost 2 decades.

"Why pay for something you can see on TV for free?" Homer asks us.
I have one simple answer to that question. Because the Simpsons make me roll on the floor laughing.

In the start, Homer’s dreams of glory are kinda smashed as he helps his new pig to walk upside down on the ceiling while singing “Spiderpig, Spiderpig” to the Spider-Man theme song.

The pig and Homer screw up Springfield so bad that the place is covered with a dome and all the people of Springfield are after the Simpsons.

The middle of the movie is based in Alaska, where much of the stupid whacky humour is missing as many of the Springfield characters aren't there.
While trying to find his family who escaped and left him alone in Alaska, he falls under the influence of a Native American woman he calls “Boob Lady” and undergoes an uncharacteristic mind change that puts him into action to save Springfield.

The first 30 minutes of the movie are amazing, as whacky as the cartoon series. Like when Homer says" I've come to like you guys" we can't do anything but agree.

But later, the humour gets less and it gets a bit emotional. This movie shows a little of the Simpsons emotional side.

The movie boasts the same sly cultural references and political gimmicks. The President is Arnold Schwarzenegger but his voice is done by someone else.

Green Day and Tom Hanks also make an appearance in this movie.

The film had it's moments, good ones and bad ones.

The characters are very nicely drawn and have a lot of color.

There are some hilarious one liners too.

I felt that they should have brought something new into this film... But anyway, this stuff works too.

Verdict: The best film of the summer in my opinion!

I'll give it a 9/10.

One of the best comedies to hit the screens in a long time.

The wonder of space - Galactic Suite

“Galactic Suite”, the first hotel planned in space, expects to open for business in 2012 and would allow guests to travel around the world in 80 minutes.

Features:

Space hotel costs $4m for three-day stay
Guests spa in weightless room of bubbles
Cost of tourist space travel plummeting

Its Barcelona-based architects say the space hotel will be the most expensive in the galaxy, costing $4 million for a three-day stay.

During that time guests would see the sun rise 15 times a day and use Velcro suits to crawl around their pod rooms by sticking themselves to the walls like Spiderman.

Company director Xavier Claramunt says the three-bedroom boutique hotel's joined up pod structure, which makes it look like a model of molecules, was dictated by the fact that each pod room had to fit inside a rocket to be taken into space.

“It's the bathrooms in zero gravity that are the biggest challenge,” Mr Claramunt said.

“How to accommodate the more intimate activities of the guests is not easy.”

But they may have solved the issue of how to take a shower in weightlessness - the guests will enter a spa room in which bubbles of water will float around.

When guests are not admiring the view from their portholes they will take part in scientific experiments on space travel.

Galactic Suite began as a hobby for former aerospace engineer Claramunt, until a space enthusiast decided to make the science fiction fantasy a reality by fronting most of the $3 billion needed to build the hotel.

An American company intent on colonising Mars, which sees Galaxy Suite as a first step, has since come on board, and private investors from Japan, the US and the United Arab Emirates are in talks.

Plenty rich enough

If Mr Claramunt is secretive about the identity of his generous backer, he is more forthcoming about the custom he can expect.

“We have calculated that there are 40,000 people in the world who could afford to stay at the hotel," he said.

"Whether they will want to spend money on going into space, we just don't know.”

Four million dollars might be a lot to spend on a holiday, but those in the nascent space tourism industry say hoteliers have been slow on the uptake because no one thought the cost of space travel would come down as quickly as it has.

Galactic Suite said the price included not only three nights in space.

Guests also get eight weeks of intensive training at a James Bond-style space camp on a tropical island.

“There is fear associated with going into space,” Mr Claramunt said.

“That's why the shuttle rocket will remain fixed to the space hotel for the duration of the guests' stay, so they know they can get home again.”

In an era of concern over climate change, Galaxy Suite have no plans so far to offset the pollution implications of sending a rocket to carry just six guests at a time into space.

“I'm hopeful that the impact of seeing the Earth from a distance will stimulate the guests' urge to value and protect our planet,” Mr Claramunt said.

Kumble surprises everyone by scoring his maiden ton

Anil Kumble scored a maiden Test century on Friday to spur India to 664 all out on the second day of the third and final Test and put his side within sight of their first series victory in England for 21 years.

England, trailing 1-0, were 24 for one at the close and now look certain to end an unbeaten home record stretching back to 2002. Andrew Strauss was the man to fall, caught at fine leg after top-edging a pull shot off Zaheer Khan for six.

Number eight batsman Kumble cracked an unbeaten 110 after wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni had flayed the England bowlers for 92 from 81 balls. Sachin Tendulkar chipped in with 82 until he departed 10 minutes before lunch.

Kumble came in at the fall of Tendulkar's wicket and batted throughout the afternoon session and for most of the third session. His previous Test best was 88.

Kumble scored his maiden century, with an innings of 110 not out against England to help them finish with 664. He took 118 Test matches to reach his maiden test hundred, which is a record, beating Chaminda Vaas who had held this record previously with 96 tests. It was also the only hundred by an Indian in the 3 Test series.

Mississippi River bridge Collapses

In the weeks prior to August 1, 2007, Mn/DOT conducted repairs on the surface of the bridge and, shortly before the incident, announced that it would reduce traffic flow on the bridge to one lane in each direction during the late evenings of July 31 and August 1 to accommodate construction.^[34]^[35]^[36]

At 6:01:38 PM, CDT on August 1, 2007, a large portion of the bridge collapsed into the river and onto the riverbanks below.^[35]^[37] The collapse took only four seconds, sending more than 50 vehicles, their occupants and several construction workers into the river or onto its banks.^[12]^[35]^[38]^[39]

Several vehicles caught fire among the debris, including a semi-trailer truck, forcing fire crews to route hoses from several blocks away.^[12] In addition, a portion of the bridge fell onto a freight train traveling beneath the structure.^[40] No one on the train was injured.^[41] Drivers were stranded on parts of the collapsed bridge that were not submerged.^[42] Fifty children, aged four to fourteen, and eight staff members were riding a school bus that was on the bridge at the time of the collapse, returning from a weekly field trip to a water park. The bus made it most of the way across the bridge before the roadway collapsed underneath the vehicle.^[43] Reports indicate that all the children on the bus escaped safely, but one youth worker was severely injured.^[44]

Sequential images of the collapse were taken by an outdoor security camera located near the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers control house for Saint Anthony Falls Lower Lock and Dam.^[45]^[46]

By August 2, rescue efforts had shifted to recovery of fatalities, with several vehicles known to be trapped under the debris and at least eight persons reported missing.^[35]^[47]^[48]^[49] The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lowered the river level using the Ford Dam (located approximately 3 miles (5 km) downriver at West River Road and East 50th Street) by two feet (60 cm) on August 2 to allow easier access to vehicles in the water; lowering it any more than that would actually create a more dangerous environment for divers.^[50]^[51]

Mumbai: An Indian court jailed Bollywood star Sanjay Dutt for six years on Tuesday for acquiring illegal weapons from gangsters involved in India's worst bombings that killed 257 people in 1993.

Dutt, 48, was cleared of conspiracy charges in the serial blasts in India's financial capital of Mumbai, but was found guilty of unauthorised possession of an automatic rifle and a pistol.

"It was an eminently dangerous act," judge Pramod Kode said. "With the punishment of a minimum of five years and maximum of 10 years it can in no way be a minor offence or of a less grave nature."

Dutt's trial has transfixed India and fans of Bollywood, the world's largest film industry by ticket sales. He has millions of dollars riding on him in films under production.

The actor is the most high-profile among 100 people, mostly Muslims, found guilty in the bombings trial, one of the world's longest-running court cases.

The 1993 Mumbai attacks were ordered by India's most wanted man, Dawood Ibrahim, a Muslim, to avenge the razing of a 16th-century mosque by Hindu zealots in 1992 and subsequent Hindu-Muslim riots in India, police say.

Ibrahim and his top associates have not faced trial as they fled the country soon after the blasts, police say. Ibrahim is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, but the government in Islamabad denies this.

Dutt's lawyers had urged that the actor, who found fame playing gangsters and anti-heroes, be set free for his good behaviour during his bail.

But the court rejected the argument.

Son of legendary film couple Sunil Dutt and Nargis, the heavy-set actor has been on bail since 1995 after more than a year in prison during initial investigations into the blasts.

He is expected to appeal.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's end (PS2)

After missing out on making on the official game of the second movie, Disney made up for lost time by including the second and third movies in their latest Pirates release.

The game starts of where the previous one ended, duh!

You find Davvy Jones heart and you'l have to fight the mighty Kracken and bla bla bla.

The game captures the humour and look of the movies very well, but fails to emulate the film's action scenes.

The Kracken looks horrible, all the characters look like they have been cut with diamonds again and again and again.

Camera angles do not need to be used in this game, as it adjusts the angles on it's own.

The graphics are totally rubbish, looking like a C grade PSP game or a Nintendo DS game.

Gameplay: 5

Graphics: 4

Sound: 7

Overall value: 5

My score: 5.3 / 10

This is a dull, repetitive game with lame graphics.
Give this one a miss, unless you are a Pirates fan.

India crush England at last

After all the excellent work done over the last four days, India only needed to complete the formalities on the final day, but they were made to work hard to polish off the remaining 63 runs. Led by a fiery spell from Chris Tremlett, England fought with plenty of heart, and India needed 21 overs before finally completing a seven-wicket victory, their fifth Test win in England and the first at Trent Bridge, to go 1-0 in the series.

Wasim Jaffer and Dinesh Karthik resumed the Indian innings at 10 without loss, and motored to 47 fairly comfortably. Karthik played a couple of handsome backfoot punches square on the off side, while Jaffer played his trademark effotless flicks. Both batsmen played and missed a few times off Ryan Sidebottom, but a ten-wicket win was on the cards when Tremlett struck - not once, but three times. England's only hope of gaining some brownie points and take a few top-order wickets before The Oval Test, and Tremlett did that. nailing both openers with short balls that bounced more than the batsmen expected - Jaffer top-edged a pull to gully while Karthik nicked a beauty which bounced and seamed away.

Buoyed by those successes, Tremlett and James Anderson let it rip at India's two most experienced batsmen. Both bowlers liberally dished out short-pitched deliveries at the batsmen, and then mixed it with pitched-up, awayswingers. Both Tendulkar and Dravid played and missed a few times, before Tendulkar pushed at a short one off his hips straight to Alastair Cook at leg gully, who had been cleverly stationed for that stroke.

Dravid, though, patiently swayed out of the way of every short ball that came his way, and a target of 73 meant victory was only a matter of time. The winning runs came when Anderson bowled an inswinger which beat Sourav Ganguly and Matt Prior, and raced down for four byes.
The victory means India have now won at least one Test in ten of their last 12 tours, but have only won one of those series against a team other than Bangladesh or Zimbabwe. With the last Test at The Oval - a venue which has traditionally produced belters - India have an excellent opportunity to go on and get that rare overseas series win. England, on the other hand, haven't lost a series at home since the 2001 Ashes, which sets up the last game of this series quite splendidly.

India won due to Zaheer Khan's efforts of 9 wickets.

The final installment in the HP series is finally out. Sources report that 3 million copies were sold on the first day, 21st July. The day before, crazy Harry potter fans were seen milling around, camping near the bookstores.

The book starts with Severus Snape and another Death Eater moving towards Malfoy Manor, the new hideout for Lord Voldemort. The are plotting to take over the Ministry for Magic. Meanwhile they are also planning to ambush Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix while they are escorting him. Will Harry win? or will Voldemort? Does Harry destroy all the Horcruxes? All answers are provided in this book.

This book is the DARKEST and the DEEPEST of 'em all. An amazing book, I must say.

It has a very colourful and descriptive world, the magic of Rowling. But this book has many more deaths and mysteries in it.

I felt that the book fulfilled all expectations. It surely gave all the answers we needed and also provided extra thrillers. We see Potter here in a new avatar, a murderous one.

It lived up to everyone's expectations. A thumbs up.

Tendulkar does it again

In an emphatic statement ahead of the first Test at Lord's, Sachin Tendulkar held the Indians' innings together with a majestic century on the second day of the tour match at Chelmsford. Brushing aside a top-order collapse, Tendulkar's masterful 171 steered the Indians to 336 for 7 at the end of the day, 77 behind the England Lions.

Tendulkar's counter-punch rescued India from a perilous 14 for 3, which was to become 65 for 4 an hour later. Graham Onions had struck a double blow in his first over, the second of the innings, before Stuart Broad and Chris Tremlett nailed a wicket apiece. It was only thanks to Tendulkar's 140-run stand with Yuvraj Singh, who lent support with a fighting 59, that the Indians could get past the 200-mark before a 99-run stand with Mahendra Singh Dhoni ensured that the good work didn't go to waste.

Once the Lions had declared their innings closed at 423 for 8, with Tim Bresnan staying undefeated, India's top order came apart. Wasim Jaffer failed for the third successive innings after he continued to be unsure of whether to go forward or back; VVS Laxman spent just four minutes out in the middle before nicking to the wicketkeeper; and Dinesh Karthik was beaten by one that moved away, though he was clearly unhappy with the decision.

Just as the Indian batting line-up looked like it would unravel, Tendulkar plugged the gaps. He appeared to be batting on a far flatter pitch, though he was lucky to survive two tough chances - first on 39, when Ravinder Bopara fumbled at leg gully and then on 53 when Owais Shah let go of a low chance at a conventional gully. The crafting of the innings, however, was reminiscent of some gems from the past and, despite wickets tumbling and the ball jagging around, Tendulkar chose to attack.

He began with a crisp two to midwicket but really announced himself with a dart-straight caress past Onions for four. The meaty punch, which one is accustomed to seeing when Tendulkar is in the groove, was on display, the stance was upright and never did he try to swish across the line. A racy start was followed by a quiet period but that was the most nervy phase of his innings. He was first let off a few moments after Sourav Ganguly's dismissal and India would have struggled to recover from the double blow.

With luck on his side, though, he treated the Saturday crowd to some special strokeplay - shredding Adil Rashid's legbreaks in a sequence that read: four through cover, four through cover, six straight back. The first was a low full toss, the second a good-length ball and the third tossed up but Tendulkar's nimble footwork made them all look ordinary.

The final session, when he went from 99 to 171, was laced with more mastery and a paddle sweep of Bopara's medium-pace underlined his control. He improvised in the third session - making room, angling, dabbing - before finally falling to a tired loft to Shah at long-off who hung on this time, though it was 118 runs too late.

Yuvraj and Dhoni cashed in on the featherbed of a pitch, one that didn't offer too much assistance after the shine had worn off the ball. Yuvraj overcame an iffy start, cracked six fours in his 77-ball stay, and grew in confidence as his innings progressed. However, he couldn't curb his flashes outside off and fell chasing a wide one off Stuart Broad. Dhoni managed some good batting practise, after a double-failure in the opening tour game, peppering cover-drives when the ball was pitched up. Both, though, were only building on the platform that was laid by Tendulkar, announcing his arrival as only he can.

Sri Lanka erase Bangla hopes

Muttiah Muralitharan became just the second bowler in history to reach 700 Test wickets as Sri Lanka rounded off a clean sweep of Bangladesh at Kandy, their 50th win in Tests. Bangladesh had to make 369 runs in order to get Sri Lanka to bat a second time but Murali picked up 6 for 54, his second consecutive five-for, as the hosts won the third Test by an innings and 193 runs.

Riding on a batting master-class from Sri Lanka's two most senior batsmen and with the fourth-day surface flattening out nicely, Murali spun a web around Bangladesh to seize his 20th ten-wicket haul. After a positive first session, where just two wickets fell, Bangladesh collapsed to 176 in no time, the last eight wickets going down for just 70 runs.

After Sri Lanka declared at their overnight score of 500 for 4 Bangladesh put up a 47-run opening stand between Shahriar Nafees and Javed Omar. Omar's feet were frozen against the moving ball yet he managed 22 before edging Lasith Malinga to slip. It had taken Sri Lanka nearly 73 minutes to get that breakthrough, but from then on the wickets came quicker.

Habibul Bashar once again failed, giving Murali the charge only to get bowled for 15. It was a reckless movement from Bangladesh's most experienced batsman given that he and Nafees had put on 51 in just over ten overs.

Nafees, not included in the one-day side against Sri Lanka, played some good cover drives and sweeps during his third Test half-century. By far the most comfortable batsman, he got his front foot to the pitch, enabling him to dispatch anything slightly full into the gaps, and the back foot across to defend the shorter stuff.

Nafees hooked one into the deep and it landed a few feet before the fielder, but when Malinga pitched short a second time he hammered him through midwicket for four. His 50 was raised off just 71 deliveries with another slog-sweep off Murali for four.

After Bashar's untimely dismissal, Nafees and Mohammad Ashraful took Bangladesh to 106 for 2 when rain stopped play five minutes before lunch. But after the interval it was a one-sided affair. Murali struck in his second over after lunch, forcing Nafees to defend a quicker, flatter delivery on middle and leg and edge to Mahela Jayawardene at slip.

Four fielders hovered around Ashraful's bat as Murali bustled in and looked for sharp drift into the pads. Ashraful tried to paddle anything pitched outside leg stump, and a ten-run over against Murali showed his ability to use his feet. But he chose to play back to the wrong delivery - one that fizzed and spun back - and was struck above the knee roll in front of leg stump.

After that wicket Jayawardene immediately brought on Sujeewa de Silva, and the move worked like a charm. Mushfiqur Rahim failed to keep a drive down and gave a comfortable catch to point and Rajin Saleh didn't trouble the scorers at all, chasing one and edging low into Jayawardene's palms at second slip.

Murali continued to toss it up and Mashrafe Mortaza heaved one down long-on's throat to give him wicket number 698. But when Malinga returned and immediately had Tushar Imran (17) caught by Jayawardene at short midwicket, the focus turned to whether the master spinner could get to 700 wickets. A few tense moments followed as Malinga nearly had Shahadat Hossain a couple times, but the last two batsmen helped Murali get to the landmark in the space of three deliveries.

The scenes at Kandy, his home ground, were spectacular and fitting for a bowler as consistent as Murali. He can now hope to break Shane Warne's record of most number of Test wickets - 708 - when Sri Lanka play their next Test series against Australia in November.

With the win, Sri Lanka completed a three-game sweep of Bangladesh, who have not won a Test since January 2005. On the basis of this Test, the two sides are trudging very different paths.

I even heard that there was a special Darth Vader edition!

The new PSP will sell for around $200 and will be available in Asia and Europe by Christmas.

West Indies crush minnows

Netherlands proved no match for a confident West Indies side as they went down by 10 wickets in the opening match of the quadrangular series at Clontarf in Dublin. Dwayne Smith's medium pace claimed four wickets as Netherlands collapsed for 80, then Chris Gayle's 41-ball half-century ensured West Indies sped home before the approaching clouds caused any problems.

West Indies needed less than 15 overs to knock off the runs as Gayle slammed six fours a six. Devon Smith provided solid support in what was nothing more than an extended net and completed the victory with a flick to fine leg.

Netherlands' batsmen had no such luxury as only three managed to reach double figures. Their problems started early when Ravi Rampaul trapped Tim de Grooth lbw in the fourth over and Bas Zuiderent, formerly of Sussex, fell in similar fashion. Alex Kervezee, who is on Worcestershire's books, managed five boundaries in his 22 before being caught behind off Powell and the innings continued in a rapid downward spiral.

Denesh Ramdin was kept busy behind the stumps, collecting five catches, as West Indies' seamers caused plenty of problems. Fidel Edwards proved too quick for Peter Borren then Smith's swing did the bulk of the remaining damage. Darren Sammy, who missed out on the one-day series against England, claimed two cheap wickets as the innings folded inside 32 overs.

There was no sign of West Indies relaxing following the series win against England with Gayle determined not to slip up against the Associates.

Netherlands, though, were clearly not up to the battle and are a few rungs down from the likes of Ireland, who make up the tournament alongside Scotland. Netherlands have a chance to put up a better showing when they take on the hosts, at Stormont, on Wednesday.

Sussex fights back v/s India

A day of several twists and turns saw the match going down to the wire and 17 wickets falling but the Indians would have been sorely disappointed at not being able to pick up that one last wicket to win their tour opener. A batting collapse in the morning was followed by Rahul Dravid's declaration, setting Sussex a target of 273; the bowlers managed to take nine wickets but the last pair held out for 8.5 overs, Robin Martin-Jenkins scoring a gritty 45.

The day began with Sussex's fast bowlers making inroads into the Indian top order and swinging the advantage their way. A ninth-wicket stand of 64 between RP Singh, whose 41 was his career-best score, and Rahul Dravid saved them from potential embarrassment at 120 for 8. Dravid eventually declared on 184 for 8 shortly before tea.

Sreesanth struck an early blow during Sussex's chase, when Chris Nash top-edged a pull to Ishant Sharma at mid-on, but his new-ball spell wasn't as impressive as his first innings effort for he bowled much straighter and lacked swing. RP Singh, however, bowled an excellent spell, hitting a good length and getting several balls to leave Michael Yardy before pitching one close enough to take the outside edge to Karthik, who was keeping wickets in place of the injured MS Dhoni.

Ranadeb Bose also improved on his performance in the first innings and got the ball to swing away from the right-handers after pitching much closer to the batsmen. He was rewarded just before tea when Carl Hopkinson played an expansive drive at an outswinger and edged to point, where Gambhir dived full stretch to his left to take the catch.

At tea, Sussex were 46 for 3 and the likelihood of a draw grew as Richard Montgomerie and Michael Thornley added 50 runs for the fourth wicket. Kumble opened the door for the Indians by bowling Thornley and followed up by trapping Montgomerie lbw with the googly. Sussex were 106 for 5 and, when Andy Hodd and Olli Rayner fell cheaply, it seemed a matter of time before the Indians wrapped it up. However the last three batsmen - Saqlain Mushtaq, James Kirtley and Jason Lewry - hung around for 22.5 overs to deny the Indians.

Although the Indians had the better of the day by taking nine wickets, the inability to take the final wicket will surely rankle. Sreesanth's rhythm in the second innings was hot and cold and Bose was also toothless after his first spell because he was swinging it outside the off stump at no real pace. Kumble, who's mopped up many tails over the years, was unable to dislodge Jason Lewry, the No 11 batsman, even though he had two full overs at him at the end.

If the end was disappointing, the day's beginning was alarming as the Indian batsmen failed to exhibit the same application they had on Day One. Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Karthik, the overnight batsmen, got out after settling down and Gautam Gambhir fell to a half-hearted shot before getting his eye in, a luxury that cannot be afforded against England.

Kirtley struggled to adjust to the right- and-left-hand combination and bowled a leg-stump line, allowing Yuvraj to get going with a couple of easy boundaries behind square on the leg side. Yuvraj scored predominantly on the on side, barring one cover drive for four, but Kirtley eventually got him to nick an attempted leg-glance to wicketkeeper Hodd.

Karthik batted fluently, latching on to anything short from Lewry, cutting through point and pulling in front of midwicket. He was unsettled, though, by Martin-Jenkins with a short ball that caught him off guard and kissed the gloves before flying over Hodd's head. A little later, Martin-Jenkins pitched one on leg and middle and got it to straighten; Karthik tried to flick and was struck plumb in front to leave India on 76 for 4. Gambhir, usually proficient at dispatching wide deliveries through point, then decided to play at a Martin-Jenkins delivery very late; it climbed on him and he spooned an easy catch to Carl Hopkinson at point.

Rahul Dravid, batting with Karthik as a runner because of his strained calf, and VVS Laxman were solid against both pace and spin, and Laxman hit a couple of classy drives through cover before he was dismissed by a stroke of bad luck. He went on to the back foot to hit a long hop from Saqlain Mushtaq through covers, Michael Thornley found himself in the way at silly point and the ball bounced off his shin pad straight to Hodd behind the stumps.

India had lost four wickets for 95 runs in the morning session and it got worse in the first over after lunch, when Yardy had both Kumble and Sreesanth caught at short leg. At 120 for 8, Sussex were confident of batting soon but RP Singh batted freely and kept slogging Yardy and Rayner with the turn to the midwicket fence and lofting them down the ground. RP Singh's 41 came off only 46 balls and Dravid decided it was time to let his bowlers have a shot at Sussex after the lead reached 272. The lead was ample enough but the Indian bowlers weren't able to finish the job in the limited time.

Apple Inc. will follow up its debut iPhone with a cheaper version based on the iPod nano, a JPMorgan financial analyst said yesterday, echoing comments last week by bloggers scouring the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database.

Kevin Chang, a Taiwan-based analyst with New York's JPMorgan Chase & Co., said that Apple will release a less-expensive iPhone in the fourth quarter, according to Reuters.

Chang, who based his forecast on unnamed sources in the supply channel and an Apple application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office filed last week, said a follow-on to the current iPhone could be based on the iPod nano, Apple's flash drive-based music player. "We believe that iPod nano will be converted into a phone because it's probably the only way for Apple to launch a lower end phone without severely cannibalizing iPod nano," Chang told Reuters.

At US$300, a scaled-down nano-based iPhone might sell as many as 30 million to 40 million units in 2008, Chang argued. Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, has fixed the iPhone sales target through 2008 at 10 million handsets.

Apple's iPod nano currently sells for between $149 and $249.

Chang's take comes after bloggers last week noticed a July 5 patent application titled "Touch pad with symbols based on mode" that, they theorized, could serve as the interface for an entry-level iPhone.

Both Unwired View and MyiTablet," for instance, noted that the patent described a touchpad-based device that would serve as only phone and iPod. Unlike the current iPhone, the cheaper alternative would not boast a large screen or allow Internet browsing.

The patent application spells out a touchpad, similar to the iPod's click-wheel, that would change modes -- and its display -- depending on the application. When in phone mode, for example, the circular touchpad could show dialing numbers in a style reminiscent of long-obsolete rotary phones. Switch to music mode and the touchscreen reverts to a traditional iPod click-wheel for traversing artist or genre lists.

Apple introduced the iPhone on June 29 to fanfare and long lines of customers.
